TRAVIS ANSWERED THE hotel door on the second knock, but he wasn’t interested in looking at her. Cassidy stood quietly by the door, waiting for him to acknowledge her, but it seemed to be a losing battle. He’d already gathered up their stuff, even bagging up the mass of beads she’d accumulated their first night on Bourbon.

“So. You and the Captain are getting back together, I take it?”

Cassidy frowned. “What gave you that idea?”

He didn’t answer, just gave a derisive snort, and she suddenly realized what happened. “You saw the kiss, didn’t you?” Of course he would think that, especially if he left at that moment and didn’t see all that had come after. “Travis—”

“I don’t get it,” he exploded, throwing his hands into the air. “The boy cheated on you and you’re taking him back? You deserve so much better than that.”

His protective response warmed her, but she kept her own emotions in check. “I can make my own decisions.”

“Yeah, that’s turned out well for you, hasn’t it? Why didn’t you just tell me I was a phase, a little vacation before going back to your golden boy there?”

Seeing him mad at her like this made her heart squeeze painfully. “Well, why didn’t you tell me it was you who left me those flowers?”

He paused, frowning at her. “Flowers?”

Cassidy swallowed, suddenly nervous. “After my mother died. You left those flowers on my porch, didn’t you?”

He looked away, and she had her answer. “Travis, this might sound stupid, but it was more the presence of those flowers and less the boy who I thought gave them to me that helped.”

Travis still wouldn’t look at her, and Cassidy continued somewhat desperately, “I’d shut myself down for weeks, wouldn’t leave the house or anything. You knew this; my father told me you used to come over to see me but he’d have to turn you away. Those flowers did something I couldn’t even do myself; they helped to get me out of the house.

“Afterwards, I realized how miserable I’d become, refusing to even leave the house, and, well, I guess I shut down my emotions too. Chad was so easy; he didn’t demand anything except loyalty, and I’d convinced myself that was enough—I convinced myself that was love. Then you go and show me that picture, and upend my world again.”

“I love you, Cassidy.”

His words stole the breath from her lungs. Travis dragged his gaze to hers, eyes tortured. “I’ve loved you every minute of every day since the moment I met you. I worshipped you up close, and then when you withdrew into yourself, I worshipped you from afar. The teasing, the pranks, it was all me trying to get through to that girl again, the one I couldn’t forget.”

Cassidy took one step forward, then another, until she was standing in front of Travis. He stared down at her, his throat working, a muscle ticking in his jaw. She laid one hand on his arm, and could feel the tension nearly vibrating off him.
